press kit & bio

Grex is an art rock band based out of Oakland, California. In biological terms, a "grex" is an entity composed of several smaller organisms. Grex (the band) explores the meeting point between fun, delightfully strange psychedelic pop/rock and the dark outer reaches of noise and free jazz.

Grex embarks on a special short run of WC dates! Look out for all-new, never-before-heard songs, some fresh, unexpected sounds, and--this summer, at long last--the release of the Electric Ghost Parade LP!!!

April 1, 7pm, Grex at Open Gate Series w/Trevor Anderies's Three Finger Jack @ Eagle Rock Center for the Arts (Los Angeles, CA)

April 10, 7pm, Grex & Brimstone and Glory (silent film screening, featuring Robert Lopez on drums) @ The Uptown (Oakland, CA)

For this special occasion, the group will debut a new version of its two-man-band configuration, showcasing a slew of never-before-heard original songs. This new music is warped--a combination of lilting vocal melodies, dark, loping beats, and a fair bit of impressionistic noise. It's virgin territory for the band--like nothing you've ever heard before!

Taglish is a new work from Bay Area guitarist/composer Karl Evangelista and art rock outfit Grex--an album of original Filipino-American music that is staggering in scope and strangeness.

Inspired by Evangelista's family experiences, Taglish is an exploration of the multifaceted nature of both contemporary music and 21st century immigrant culture. The project synthesizes jazz, American song, 20th century experimentalism, and Filipino folk melody into a sound that is at once universal and starkly personal. Centered around Evangelista's duo Grex (with multi-instrumentalist Rei Scampavia) and featuring trailblazing saxophonist/Asian Improv aRts cofounder Francis Wong, renowned electric bassist/multi-instrumentalist John-Carlos Perea, and Bay Area drumming dynamo Jordan Glenn, Taglish is a genuinely multicultural, trans-idiomatic work.
